Manny Pacquiao won!
9:01 AM Monday, January 23, 2006It's a redundant jubilation, I guess, for Pinoy bloggers... but I was absolutely thrilled yesterday when Jojo got the call informing us that Pacquiao managed to knock Morales out in the 10th round. We didn't attempt anymore to line up in SM cinemas for real-time viewing of the match, as we had relatives from Australia to meet, and a sick nephew to go to (who's at the OR as I post this).
Anyway, again, am truly delighted that he won... boxing is something we've always been good at, and something where we win fair and square. It's honor that comes at a very high price for the boxer, but it's a sacrifice that isn't without rewards.
After all, Pacquiao has secured, not just the future of his kids... but also the future of the kids in his team.
Did you see the way he was hugged? It was like "thank you, my kids are secured a college education", "thank you, we can finally buy that house", "thank you, we can go on that European cruise now" or "thank you, I can buy another lion now" (in the case of Chavit Singson, who must have earned as much as Manny did by way of betting).
But the glee over his win is also doubled because, true enough, the Pinoys were one yesterday. Roads were generally quiet and traffic-free as everybody stayed home, cooking lunch really early.
And my hubby was uber delighted that news last night didn't contain any bit of the usual tragedy (crime, dirty politics, dirtier politicians, bad economy, worse leadership). For once, it SEEMED like no crime was committed as everybody was busy supporting this man from General Santos City, this man who we call the People's champion.
:)
Hopefully, my nephew would be as strong and graceful as a fighter as Manny was.
